The Threadbury Fit Guide: How Your Garments Should Feel

The feeling of a perfect fit is a balance—part functional, part social, and entirely personal. At Threadbury, our goal is made-for-you clothing made easy. We want to remove the guesswork from your wardrobe so you can put on your clothes and get back to your day with confidence.

If you are trying on your new garments and want a quick, no-nonsense checklist to verify the fit, use the guidelines below.

Suit Jackets, Blazers & Tuxedo Jackets

A well-tailored jacket is the cornerstone of a classic wardrobe. It should feel structured, and may feel a bit more snug than you're used to if this is your first custom garment. With that said, it shouldn't feel restrictive.

  • The Sleeve Length: Your jacket sleeve should end precisely at your wrist bone. This strategic length allows about  ½ inch of your shirt cuff to show, creating a sharp, intentional frame for your hands.

  • The Chest and Shoulders: The shoulder seams should align perfectly with the end of your natural shoulders. When buttoned, the lapels should lie flat against your chest without bowing or pulling.

Suit Pants

Suit trousers are designed to sit securely on your natural waist (often slightly higher than your casual jeans) to create a clean line under your jacket. You should be able to fit a few fingers inside of your waistband for comfort, but you should not need a belt to keep them from slipping down.

You should be able to sit down and stand up again without the fabric catching and staying on your calves.

The Break: The "break" is the fold of fabric where your pant leg meets your shoe. Whether you prefer no break (a crisp, modern look where the hem grazes the shoe) or a full break (a traditional fold of fabric resting on the shoe) is entirely up to your personal style. All are appropriate for the office or a formal event.

When It's Too High: If your pant hem is floating more than an inch above the top of your shoe while standing naturally, the hem is too short.

When It's Too Low: If the fabric is heavily pooling around your ankles, folding over itself multiple times, or catching under the heel of your shoe, the hem is too long.

Chino Pants

Chinos typically fit lower on the waist than a suit pant, resting comfortably closer to your hips. They should feel slightly more relaxed than formal trousers but still tailored enough to wear with a blazer. You should not need a belt to keep them from slipping, but they shouldn't pinch your waist when you sit down.

Dress Shirts

Your dress shirt is your foundation. It needs to look just as sharp under a tailored suit at a wedding as it does on its own during a long day at the office.

The shirt sleeve should hit about ½ inch past your wrist bone. You should be able to comfortably slip 1–2 fingers between your neck and the buttoned collar. The torso should follow the lines of your body without billowing over your belt or pulling tightly across your chest.

Casual Length & Short Sleeve Shirts

For your off-the-clock wardrobe, comfort and proportion are key. These shirts are designed for a streamlined, set-and-forget look. If you selected Casual Length for your custom shirt, it is cut specifically to be worn untucked. The hem should fall comfortably around the middle of your zipper or fly. If you chose short sleeves, they should end around mid-bicep.

A Note on 100% Linen

Linen is the ultimate fabric for breathable, enduring style, but it requires a slightly different approach to fit. If your linen garments feel a little more relaxed out of the package, that is by design.

  • Style: Linen is meant to drape naturally. A slightly looser fit complements the fabric's effortless, textured look and allows air to circulate, keeping you cool.

  • Care: Pure linen has a natural tendency to shrink slightly over time with regular washing. We account for this in our tailoring so your garment settles into its permanent, perfect fit after a few wash cycles.
